Apple recently activated its new website Data and Privacy, which allows users to download all personal data that Apple associates with their accounts. This data ranges from Apple ID information to activities in the App Store, through AppleCare history and all data stored on iCloud.
At the moment, this tool located at privacy.apple.com, download personal data stored by Apple is available only to users with accounts registered in one of the European Union countries, in compliance with the provisions of the GDPR. In the coming months, the same tool will be available worldwide.
Once logged in with the data from our Apple account, the new page offers four options. Some of these, like deactivating an account, were already available before, but now they are much more accessible and easier to complete.
Get a copy of the data
With this tool, you can download a copy of our data stored by Apple apps and services. This data may include content stored on Apple servers, such as calendars, photos or documents and the history of purchases and use of the app.
Apple allows you to select the data you want to download and the company will then prepare a copy that will be sent within a maximum of seven days. Apple explains that this time “is used to verify that the request was made by you, in order to ensure the security of your data”.
The download includes information about activities and use of apps such as:
- Spreadsheets or files in JSON, CSV, XML or PDF format.
- Documents, photos and videos in original format.
- Contacts, calendars, bookmarks and emails in VCF, ICS, HTML, and EML formats.
And will not include:
- Apps, books, movies, TV shows and tracks you’ve purchased.
- Transaction history on the Apple Online Store and the history of marketing communications
- The screen is divided into two sections, one containing small data, and the other containing large data that may take longer to share.
Once you have selected the desired files and data, click Continue. At this point, you can choose the maximum file size that we consider best suited for downloading.
The data will be divided into files of this size or smaller. Now just click on Complete the request. When our data becomes available we will be notified to the e-mail address associated with our Apple ID.
In addition to downloading personal data, on the new Apple site you can also:
Correct data: if you believe that any personal information stored by Apple is not correct, you can request to update it.
Deactivate the account: temporarily deactivate your account and restrict access to data. During the period of inactivity, you will not be able to access your account or any Apple services.
Delete account: permanently delete your account and data associated with it from all Apple services.
As mentioned above, this new page was created by Apple to respect the new GDPR imposed by the European Union. So we have a single page to find out what data is stored by Apple, correct information, suspend an account or delete it altogether with a few simple steps.
