Canonical CEO claims Apple bought a 3-year supply of 4.5-inch sapphire screens for iPhone

iPhone_5s-closeupApple plans to use sapphire displays in upcoming smartphones, said GigaOm on Thursday . iPhone maker reserved a 3-year supply of protective glass, which was calculated in the company Canonical.

Rumors that Apple intends to produce iPhone sapphire screens, have already appeared in the press. Now this information was confirmed Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth .

We are talking about Ubuntu Edge – smartphone , which has become the most ambitious project in the history kraudfandingovym Kickstarter, but never managed to gain the necessary amount. The device had to get protected with a sapphire crystal screen diagonal of 4.5 inches. As you know, rumors confer next flagship smartphone Apple larger screen than that of a 4-inch iPhone 5s.

Earlier it was reported that the company GT Advanced Technologies, specializing in the production of sapphire crystal , got the necessary equipment for the manufacture of components for Apple. Currently, GT Advanced Technologies has 518 systems, which allow to produce between 103 million to 116 million 5 – inch displays per year, in the future the company should get another 420 such systems.

Sapphire screens will display iPhone stronger. It is possible that these screens will be one of the main features of the new model of  Apple smartphone .

By the way , Apple was among the first ( luxury vehicles are not considered) began to use sapphire crystal in their smartphones , so far it is limited to the protection of the camera button and the new iPhone.
