Abbott Laboratories today announced the retirement of millions of containers of baby formula powder because they may contain parts of insects.
Voluntary action impacts less than 5 million Similac packaging sold in Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. and the Caribbean. The company said that might contain tiny larvae or beetles, which in turn can cause stomach pain and digestive problems.
An Abbott spokesman revealed that the insects were discovered last week in a section of the plant in Michigan, where he reported the find to the Food and Drug Administration of the United States and immediately opened an investigation.
Infants who consume the contaminated formula may experience stomach upset and refuse to eat as a result of irritation in the gastrointestinal tract, the statement said Abbott.
Therefore, it urges mothers and fathers and / or caregivers to call the hotline (800) 986-8850 to see if the product in their home or business is included in this safety campaign.
Abbott offered a full refund to those who return the recalled product.
