Opera Mini Beta 2 invites itself to Android

  

 

Opera Software continues to improve the user experience of its mobile browsers, adding features to approximate them using the desktop browser. 

 Here are some of the many features included in Opera Mini 5:

•  Tabbed Browsing: Browse several Web sites at the same time, while easily jumping from one to another.

• Speed Dial: Get to your favorite Web page with just one click, with a set of visual bookmarks when you open a new tab.

•  Opera Link: Synchronize your bookmarks and Speed Dial between your mobile phone and desktop computer.

•  Download Manager: Manage downloads right from the browser. Pause and resume downloads to suit your needs.

Opera is saying this is “The Next Generation of Mobile Browsing. Runs on Almost Every Phone.”. “Almost” every phone, means one major device is still missing from their huge list. The iPhone. Opera has their newest mobile browser ready for the iPhone, it just all depends on if Apple will approve it for the App Store.

As for Opera Mini 5 on Android devices, it runs very fast. Compression of text and images actually takes place on Opera’s servers, saving load times on your device. The beautiful, but simple, UI lends itself well to the touch screen environment.

HTC is Nexus One cracked screen: "Doesn't go in pockets"

  

 

A shock could be avoided, as HTC replied, "People sometimes forget that this type of device is not meant to be put in a pocket." - In the siding other than in a pocket.  It could certainly be avoided as HTC said. Personally, mine is constantly in my pocket with its protective cover provided with.

Nexus One Overclocked to 1.113Ghz

It is said to be running faster and is stable at this speed. It will be interesting to see how long can these XDA devs push to see the real potential and capabilities of this Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip.

If you are feeling adventurous, follow the steps below to overclock your Nexus One to 1.113Ghz (1113Mhz). Make sure you perform a full nandroid backup first before following any of the steps mentioned below.

Warning Note: Overclocking may result in damage to your phone components, loss of life expectancy, or even frying them. Overclocking is done at your own risk and we take no responsibility for any damage you inflict upon your phone.

Step 1: You’ll need to first unlock your bootloader and then root your Nexus One on the latest Cyanogen rom (5.0.2 as of 2/15/2010). Instructions for rooting and unlocking Nexus One can be found here and here respectively.

Step 2: Download and install SetCPU app from Market.

Step 3: Enable USB debugging on the phone.

Step 4: Download the modded Kernel which is based on Cyanogen Highmem to overclock Nexus One to 1.113Ghz. Download from the source link here.

Step 5: Now reboot into fastboot and type:

fastboot flash zimage zImagekmobs

on command prompt if you are on Windows, and Terminal if on OS X.

Step 6: Once the phone has rebooted, Run SetCPU app and point it to auto-detect your CPU. (Do not choose Nexus from the list)

Step 7: Now set the max clock to the highest level and set it to run on boot.

Step 8: Reboot your phone again.

That’s it! You should now be running Nexus One on higher clock speed, making it faster and snappier than ever before.

Windows Mobile and Android Dual Boot.

This solution required booting into Windows Mobile first, before you could run Android using Haret. But now, some folks at XDA-Developers have released a new software/tool named Gen.Y DualBOOT which enables Windows phone users to dual boot Windows Mobile and Android OS on the very same handset.

 
 

Supports WVGA, VGA and QVGA devices and can be used to boot Android from both the internal and external storage. List of devices with their screen types.

• QVGA, boot from Storage Card (e.g. Vogue, Kaiser,..)
• VGA, boot from Internal Storage (e.g. Diamond)
• VGA, boot from Storage Card (e.g. Raphael)
• WVGA, boot from Storage Card (e.g. Blackstone, Topaz, Xperia,..)

1. First get Android for your device and load the files onto a storage card. The easiest way to do this is to find the Android thread within the ROM Development forum of your device over at XDA. At the end of this post we’ll provide direct links for the more popular devices.
2. Download Gen.Y DualBOOT (choose the file based on your screen resolution) and install to main memory.
3. Reboot your device. You should be presented with the bootloader screen after a few seconds (once core Windows Mobile files are loaded). We’re hearing reports that for some device, this doesn’t happen. If that is the case, you’ll have to manually launch dualBOOT (not as fun, we know) by going to /Program Files/Gen.Y.

Try Android 2.1 on Windows

A lot of phones and netbooks featuring Andriod are coming in the market. Recently in our post we told that half of LG Smartphones will feature Android OS. So, is Android OS suitable for you? don’t you want to test it before buying an Android Device? Now we are writing a procedure which will let you to try Android 2.1 on Windows, Mac and Linux.[zjtechlive]

Follow the steps try Android 2.1 on Windows, Mac and Linux.

1. Download Android SDK, AVD Manager (Windows,Mac and Linux) from here.

2. Extract the file and run “SDK Setup.exe”

3. If you receive an error message stating “Failed to fetch url…” then you will have to force the Setup program. Follow the steps:

• Close the “Refresh Sources” window.
• Cancel the “Choose Packages to Install” window.
• Select “Settings” from the left side of the “Android SDK and AVD Manager” window.
• Check the box labeled “Force https://… sources to be fetched using http://…”
• Click “Save and Apply”
• Close and restart the SDK Setup program

4. Choose the packages you want to install. Select only the packages you need.

• If you are only interested in trying out the Android 2.1 Emulator.

• Reject everything except “SDK Platform Android 2.1. API 7, revision 1” by selecting each item then selecting the Reject option.

• If you plan to develop Android applications and Games, you may wish to Accept All.
• Click “Install Selected”.

5. Allow the selected packages to download and install then close the “Installing Archives” window.

6. Create a new Android Virtual Device (AVD) by selecting “Virtual Devices” from sidebar, now click on new.

• Enter a Name
• Choose a Target (Android 2.1 – API Level 7)
• Enter a size for the emulated SD Card
• Choose a Skin or enter Resolution e.g 800×600
• Leave the default value of “Hardware” or choose SD Card Support etc.
• Click “Create AVD”

7. Start your newly created Virtual Device.

• Choose the Virtual Device from the list.

• Click “Start”

• Click “Launch” in the new window.

8. Now it will take some time to Boot.

Android 2.0 running on an HTC Touch HD

This version of Android OS for Windows phones also includes the much talked about animated boot screen from Nexus One which surprisingly runs quite smoothly in an emulated environment. Video after the jump.

Unlike the previous version, this emulation port is actually quite usable with working accelerometer, bluetooth, phone calls, SMS, WiFi and even 3G. To get it to work, head over to the XDA Developers forum to grab all the required files to run it on your Touch HD.

Nexus One Gets Android 2.1 Custom ROM

 Paul over at the Modaco forums has released one of the first custom ROM for Nexus One which packs a custom kernel, and includes busybox, nano 2.09, parted and sqlite tools, Wireless Tethering option (Yay!), titanium backup and more.

This ROM already includes the tethering hack which was first available as a part of add-ons pack for Nexus One. To install this ROM, simply follow the step by step guide posted below. Make sure you make a backup first using Nandroid. We are not to be held responsible if you end up bricking your Google phone.

Step 1: First up, you will have to unlock the bootloader, and then root your Nexus One for full file system access on Android 2.1. Follow the guide posted here to unlock the bootloader, and here to Root Nexus One if you haven’t already.

Step 2: Download the patched recovery image from the source and install it.

Step 3: Download the custom ROM from the source link and copy it to over to the SD card on the phone.

Step 4: Enter the recovery image (if you’re not in it already) by powering on while pressing ‘Home’.

Step 5: Select ‘Nandroid backup’ from the menu to do a backup.

Step 6: If you copied the custom ROM as update.zip, select ‘apply sdcard:update.zip’, else select the option below.[engadget]

Vodafone Nexus One Gets Multitouch

This surely was a set back considering the fact that  iPhone can do it since 2007. But now according to this report from Engadget, a phone passed on to the German site Heise has all the multitouch goodness like pinch-to-zoom enabled in the web browser. This could very well mean that the European version of Nexus One, which is due to launch on Vodafone in Spring of this year will have this functionality enabled right out of the box.

It is worth mentioning here that the European version of Droid, named Motorola Milestone also has all the multitouch functionality enabled, while the American version Droid on Verizon doesn’t.

HTC Espresso Ported to T-Mobile G1 and MyTouch3G with Android 2.1

HTC Espresso is a feature experience of many HTC Android based phones like HTC Hero and Droid Eris. The new Espresso user experience is going to be the part of the upcoming HTC’s Android 2.1 based handsets, which are expected to be released in the first half of 2010.

The HTC Espresso port for G1 has been stripped down with lots of optimization to make it work with G1 without any lag. It is said to be stable enough for daily use and will work with both, T-Mobile G1 and MyTouch3G.
