Google Drive is now available and you have obviously been quick to jump on the service of Google . Just as you spent every evening to have fun with the tool. Great, but not everything is rosy. Not because what you want, do you, what is synchronize your local folders with Drive without having to move to the folder of the same name. Well aware that it is completely possible, it is very easy to implement, and we’ll just look at the issue now. Yep, and something tells me that it may please you …
The magic of symbolic links
To implement our solution, we will apply the same method as Dropbox and we will therefore rely on symbolic links . What is this? Well let’s just say that a symbolic link is a kind of shortcut that will point to a folder or a file. The latter will therefore be on a corner of your hard drive while your symlinks are the exact opposite of that.Well, the concept is not very complicated to understand.
Create symbolic links is not very complicated. We can even do it directly in the terminal if necessary, but if you are not a bearded just know that you can also use software:
Once you have downloaded and installed this software, we can begin to work seriously in us sticking our first computer , one that contains all the folders and files you want to get on your other bikes.
Configure the first computer, the computer “source”
So we will start up our sleeves and take time to reflect. As you probably know, the free version of Google Drive only offers 5 GB of storage space. Well, it’s not bad but still know that it can also fill up quickly, especially if you want to put lots and lots of holiday films above. In practical terms, therefore, it is best to think through the folders you want to synchronize. Then, well just follow these steps:
- Move all the folders to synchronize your Google Drive.
- Create symbolic links to them.
- Drag your symlinks in the appropriate folder on your hard drive.
- Wait for Google Drive synchronizes your folders.
For example if I want to synchronize the directories of the file “Documents” folder on my Mac OS, therefore I move around in the Google Drive . Next, create symbolic links and moving them in my personal file. Seconds later, everything is in order and all the files that I then glide in my local folders will be sent directly to Google’s servers. As if by magic and without having anything to do. Cool, huh?
Configure the second computer, the computer “target”
Well, we’re happy but we want to go a little further. Our goal is to effectively recover all data synchronized byGoogle Drive in local issues on our second computer. If you have well understood the trick, you must already have an idea of how to achieve our goal. That said, it will still take time to detail the procedure a little story that is simpler for everyone:
- Install Google Drive on the second computer.
- Go to the folder of Drive.
- Create symlinks to the folders you want to get locally.
- Move these links in the file that goes on your computer.
They will bounce on our previous example. This time I actually wish that all files stored in my synchronized folder “Documents” can be found in the folder of the same name on my second computer. I installed Google Drive , I go into his file, I created symbolic links directory folder “Documents” . This relationship, then I make them fit in my home directory. Now all the files in my directory will be synchronized.
