YouTube has today released an iPhone application, which includes videos that can be seen on the website desktop version. The app is an alternative to the YouTube application integrated in iOS 5 and below, which will be no longer be user from iOS 6 and higher. Apple’s license has expired on YouTube and would have chosen not to renew it. Instead, Google wanted to move to its own app. You can search for videos within the app and sign in with your Google Account to access your channels and favorites.
The YouTube app looks different than the integrated iOS app. In the top left of the app, there is a button that brings a separate menu where settings, channels and favorites can be found. On the Right, you will find a magnifying glass that let users tap to do a search on YouTube. During the search, you can refine results by clicking the gear icon. You can also specify how to find videos to be sorted, when they should be uploaded and exactly how long they may be. The new app does not use the usual video player in iOS, but an individual video frame. This can in theory be possible, for example in ads display on the iPhone YouTube videos. You can see from the new video player whether you will like a video and share it easily via social networks.
According to Google, there is an iPad version in the works that is expected to be released in the App Store sometime in the coming months. On September 12, Apple media event will take place, probably an exuberant iOS 6 will be discussed.
