The wait is finally over: Apple officially presented iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, two complete and innovative smartphones. Let’s find out together.

The design of the new iPhone 13 remains similar to the previous generation, with the Ceramic Shield on the front and IP68 resistance, but with a smaller notch capable of integrating all the necessary sensors for Face ID and True Depth Camera. On the back, the photographic setup is characterized by the diagonal positioning of the two cameras.

The colors are also different; on iPhone 13 the RED, gold, black, blue, pink colors arrive while on the Pro model the colors arrive. Finally, the new iPhone 13 winks at the environment thanks to recycled materials, an extra step for the environment.

The performance of the new iPhone 13 is based on the new A15 Bionic chip made by Apple at 5 nanometers with 6-core CPU, 30% more performing 4-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. It is improved compared to the past, and there is also a new ISP for the camera, which is improved while maintaining a 12MP sensor. The new iPhones also support dual eSIM.

The new ultra-wide lens promises significantly better performance with reduced noise and a better aperture. In detail, the new camera offers an aperture of f/1.6 and a focal length of 26mm, while the ultra-wide camera (also 12MP) offers an aperture of f/2.4 and a focal length of 13mm. The Night Mode finally comes in all cameras, including Time Lapse mode.

Then comes the optical stabilization of the sensor, with excellent results in all conditions and for each lens used, whether it is the standard or the ultra-wide. The new Cinematic Mode offers all the tools to make excellent videos thanks to the new rack focus mode in videos.

For more creative control, focus can be changed during and after shooting; It is also possible to adjust the focus of the background (bokeh effect) in the Photos app, in iMovie for iOS, and soon also in iMovie for macOS and in Final Cut Pro.

Apple points out that you can only record Cinematic video at 1080p at 30fps, although you can use it with the main sensor and TrueDepth. Plus comes 4K 60 HDR support with Dolby Vision on all cameras, a wonderful step forward.

The Super Retina XDR Display gets much brighter (28% brighter) with 800 nits and 1200nits peak brightness. The diagonals remain the same as the previous model, so 6.1 “and 5.4” for the “mini” model.

In terms of connectivity, there is support for the fastest 5G network with full support for the most advanced technologies. The battery improves about 1.5 hours more on the iPhone 13 mini, and 2.5 hours on the iPhone 13. All the improvements are possible thanks to the larger battery and the optimization of the new A15 Bionic chip, as well as the intelligent power-saving modes.

The prices of the iPhone 13 mini start at € 839 while those of the iPhone 13 from € 939 with the starting cut of 128GB, a big step forward compared to the usual 64GB, and with the subsequent cuts of 256GB and 512GB. Availability is set for September 24th with pre-orders on September 17th.

iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max

No bronze color, Apple surprises everyone with the new Blue Sierra color, evidently a favorite given the huge success of last year’s model Pacific Blue.

In terms of power, on the A15 Bionic Chip dedicated to the iPhone 13 Pro, there are some new high-performance cores and four new high-efficiency cores. In the GPU we find 5-cores instead of 4, seen on the standard model. All this leads the phone to have the maximum performance in every sector. Of course, 5G remains supported.

Note that all new iPhone models are heavier than their predecessors:

iPhone 12 mini: 135 grams / iPhone 13 mini: 141 grams;

iPhone 12: 164 grams / iPhone 13: 174 grams;

iPhone 12 Pro: 189 grams / iPhone 13 Pro: 204 grams;

iPhone 12 Pro Max: 228 grams / iPhone 13 Pro Max: 240 grams

The iPhones 13 are also 0.25mm thicker than their predecessors.

The Super Retina XDR Display changes radically with increased brightness 1000 nits (1200 nits peak) and ProMotion technology with smoothness at 120Hz, as we have all been waiting for for a long time. The system is dynamic and adapts the refresh rate according to the needs and what is displayed, from a minimum of 30Hz up to a maximum of 120Hz. The diagonals remain the same as last year: 6.1 “and 6.7” for the Pro Max model.

The camera is the second revolution of this iPhone 13 Pro: the new system sees a 77mm telephoto lens for more creative options and the main camera with an f/1.5 aperture. Optical zoom reaches 3x with an excursion from ultra-wide-angle to 6x total zoom lens.

The ultra-wide lens reaches an aperture of f / 1.8 and improves its performance in the dark. The new lens design, the autofocus function featured for the first time in iPhone ultra-wide angle, and the advanced software open up a new possibility for iPhone: Macro Photography.

The all-new wide-angle camera has a wide sensor with 1.9µm pixels to reduce noise and ensure faster shutter speeds in any light. In combination with the larger aperture, the wide-angle on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max offer some improvements in low light conditions: up to 2.2 times compared to the iPhone 12 Pro and almost 1.5 times compared to iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Optical Image Stabilization on Sensor (OIS), an iPhone exclusive, is available on both models and stabilizes the sensor instead of the lens, for smooth images and stable video even when the user is not perfectly still.

Night Mode comes to all three cameras. The new processing underlying the “Photography Styles” feature uses Machine Learning to achieve the user’s preferred result in terms of colors, skin tones, and exposure without using actual filters.

As far as the video sector is concerned, we find support for the Apple ProRes cinema standard, flanked by the now consolidated Dolby Vision support for HDR. Beautiful Macro mode for slow-motion videos, extremely characteristic. ProRes is an advanced video codec widely used as the final distribution format for commercials, feature films and broadcasts, to offer greater color fidelity and less compression.
