Apple has upgraded the MacBook Pros line for 2021. the MacBook Pro entry-level with an M1 chip was introduced last year, and this year, Apple is going a step further. The latest 14-inch and 16-inch models are more powerful than ever and feature M1 Pro and M1 Max. The 16-inch version has been in need of an update for some time now.
Both MacBook Pros were announced at Apple’s October 2021 event, featuring Apple’s newly unveiled M1 Pro chip, with 8 high-performance cores and 2 high-efficiency cores, with a 16-core GPU and 32GB of RAM.
M1 Pro chip is the M1 chip enhanced version with a memory bandwidth of up to 200GB/s, up to 32GB of RAM. The CPU performance is 70% faster than the M1, the GPU performance is twice as fast as the previous generation.
M1 Pro and M1 Max Display
Apple launches a 14.2-inch model for the first time, along with the expensive 16-inch version. Now Both MacBooks have a larger display than the previous generation: the 16 “model has a 16.2-inch display with 7.7 million pixels. The 14 “model on the other hand has more space for video with an active area of 14.2 ″ and a total of 5.9 million pixels.
In this new display, Apple integrated ProMotion technology to Mac with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz. ProMotion automatically varies the refresh rate according to the movement of the contents on the screen to limit battery consumption and make every activity even more fluid and responsive.
The new design features of the MacBook Pro 2021 a new aluminum shell that optimizes internal space to offer more performance and functions. The shell develops around the new thermal system capable of moving 50% more air than the previous generation, even with reduced fan speeds.
The Magic Keyboard is in a double anodized black housing, with backlit symbols on the keys and a full-height row of function keys. Physical function keys, including the larger Esc key, replace the Touch Bar, which is much criticized by many users. The new keyboard is paired with the Force Touch trackpad.
Thanks to the energy efficiency of the new Apple Silicon, the battery lasts up to 2-4 times longer than previous models when performing intensive tasks. As mentioned before, it will also be possible to work smoothly on 8K video editing when the MacBook Pro is running on battery, for a type of task that is practically impossible for all other laptops in this class. Returning to autonomy, it is possible to reach 17 hours of video playback on the 14-inch model and 21 hours for the 16-inch model. Thanks to fast charging, we will be able to recharge the battery up to 50% capacity in just 30 minutes.
Both models have three Thunderbolt 4 ports (which can also be used for charging, as an alternative to the MagSafe) useful for connecting high-speed peripherals, an SD card slot, an HDMI port to connect monitors and TVs, and a jack for optimized headphones that also support high impedance headphones. The real news is MagSafe returning to the MacBook Pro with MagSafe 3, with an updated design and support for more power.
With the M1 Pro chip, you can connect up to two Pro Display XDR, while with the chip M1 Max you can connect up to three Pro Display XDR and a 4K TV at the same time (a record for a MacBook Pro). For wireless connectivity, MacBook Pro offers Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0.
Inside the iPhone-style notch houses the new webcam with 1080p resolution, capable of offering significantly better performance even in low light conditions. The system leverages the ISP processor and Neural Engine of the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips for computational video and thus improves video quality for sharper images and more natural skin tones. Apple has also updated the microphone and internal speakers. The new six-speaker high-fidelity audio system includes two tweeters and four force-canceling woofers, for 80% more bass. The system also supports spatial audio, which creates a three-dimensional listening experience.
