iPad Air 2020 represents a huge step forward and is getting closer and closer to iPad Pro, both in design and in performance.
Apple presented, a few minutes ago, the new iPad Air together with the new eighth-generation iPad. This new tablet is characterized by the design inspired by iPad Pro, for the support for Apple Pencil 2 and for the support for the Magic Keyboard that we have already seen on the professional tablets of Cupertino.
It starts with the 10.9 “Liquid Retina display, an undoubtedly interesting diagonal that also risks cannibalizing the smallest of the iPad Pro, with DCI P3 support, full lamination, and True Tone. This display is integrated into a frame without a Home button that fully incorporates the design of the iPad Pro. The Face ID, however, is not present as Apple has created a new Power button with integrated Touch ID, positioned on the upper edge of the tablet. An intriguing solution, also for any future developments, although the lack of Face ID leaves a bit of a bad taste in the mouth given the total re-design of the tablet. The stereo speakers on both sides of the tablet remain present.
On a technical level, this iPad Air makes a great generational leap with the introduction of the Apple A14 Bionic SoC, made with a 5-nanometer production process. This makes it possible to introduce 11.8 billion transistors in an SoC which thanks to Apple’s optimization offers a 40% faster performance. Specifically, we are talking about a 6-core CPU, a 4-core GPU, and the new generation Neural Engine with 16 cores available. But the technical features don’t stop there: new accelerators for Machine Learning arrive, an advanced ISP and the Secure Enclave is present. This SoC, demonstrating the power at home “Apple Silicon” manages to reach 11 trillion operations per second.
Speaking of connectivity, the new iPad Air offers WiFi 6 support and 60% faster LTE connectivity. Finally, the USB-C connector is introduced for fast data transfer and 20W charging. The battery should last the canonical 10 hours.
The cameras have been improved and offer the following technical specifications:
- 7MP f / 2.2 front camera with 1080p 60fps video support and Smart HDR
- 12MP f / 1.8 rear camera with stabilization, 4K 60fps support, and 240fps slow motion
This new iPad Air will be available starting next month in five different colors: space gray, silver, rose gold, green, and light blue.
- 64GB WiFi: $599
- Cellular + WiFi 64GB: $729
