Apple announced what iOS 11.3 will bring, expected update for iPhone and iPad that will integrate new features dedicated to the battery life, ARKit, Animoji and much more! The first beta is available now.

iOS 11.3 will be released in the spring and will bring new features for augmented reality on iPhone and iPad, new Animoji on iPhone X and the ability to view health data in the Health app.

ARKit enhancements

The introduction of ARKit with iOS 11 has enabled millions of developers to integrate augmented reality features in the iPhone and iPad apps, making iOS the largest AR platform in the world. Apple will further improve this technology with ARKit 1.5. The new version will offer more immersive AR experiences that integrate better with the world and provide developers with the tools to create a new generation of AR apps.

In addition to horizontal surfaces such as tables and chairs, ARKit is now able to recognize and place virtual objects on vertical surfaces such as walls and doors and can more precisely map irregular surfaces such as circular tables. Using advanced artificial vision techniques to find and recognize the position of 2D images such as signs, posters and works of art, ARKit can integrate these real-world images into AR experiences such as filling a museum with interactive exhibits or giving life to the poster of a movie. In addition, viewing through the camera now has a resolution of more than 50% and supports autofocus for a sharper perspective.

New Animoji

Apple confirms that the Animoji have been a hit among iPhone X users, thanks to the ability to use their own voice and facial expressions to record and send messages or real videos as demonstrated by the success of Animoji-Karaoke.

iOS 11.3 introduces four new Animoji, giving iPhone X users the ability to create animations using even a lion, a bear, a dragon or a skull.

Health record integration

Patients from participating health institutions will have access to information provided by the various institutions, organized in one view, and will receive regular notification of the results of their laboratory analyzes, medications, their conditions and more. Health Records data is encrypted and protected with a code.

With Business Chat you can talk to a service representative, make an appointment or make purchases via Apple Pay in the Messages app. Business Chat does not share user contact information with companies and offers users the ability to stop the chat at any time.

Battery & power management

After the many criticisms received by Apple for the battery issue and slow performance, iOS 11.3 adds new features to show the battery status and to suggest whether or not it needs assistance. These features will be present in Settings -> Battery and will be activated on iPhone 6 and later models.

In addition, users can now see if the power management feature is active that dynamically calibrates the performance of some system components, so as to avoid sudden shutdowns, first introduced in iOS 10.2.1. With this option, users can choose to deactivate it. This feature will be available in Settings -> Battery on iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. These features will be available in a later beta version of iOS 11.3.
