Excellent information for any person having a look to release your iPhone from AT&T.  The company will begin to unlock iPhones that are off contract upon  customers request pointed out by Engadget after receiving an anonymous tip

Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.

If you're AT & T customer you can request to have your iPhone unlocked so you can use with another carrier.

Well my people, this has been a story that must personally verify with customer service and verify if the current account that qualify for the unlocking. AT&T has not made an announcement yet regarding this option, although engadget said that the company spokesman confirmed the new policy change that is about to start this Sunday.
