Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are officially introduced, two devices more polished, with more advanced technologies and, in short, better than a year ago. The announcement of new phones by Google is one of the most important and expected of the year, so it is for the Android ecosystem in full. With these new Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, those of Mountain View intend to join the difficult battle for the throne of the current high-end phone, basing the main attraction of this pair of terminals in one of the lands where Google is a expert company, besides being one of the few aspects that can make a current high-end phone really make a difference: software and services.
Google Pixel 2
This should have been the main idea of Google when designing the new Pixel 2. Its physical appearance is similar to the first edition of Pixel phones: a unibody aluminum chassis, a glass back panel that covers the camera and screen frames that are not precisely reduced. However, there is a new addition that many were looking forward to: IP67 protection against water and dust.
Of course, there are differences with respect to the first edition. The first one is that his body is now not so rounded, but his lines are more straight and his format has become somewhat more square. In addition, the rear glass panel now hides all the antennas of the device to avoid the lines found in the first generation, and the upper and lower margins of the screen are now more useful than before.
Google Pixel 2 XL
On the other hand, with the Pixel 2 XL Google has risked adopting some of the details that flood the current high-end telephone line, in order to launch a much more competitive phone in this field. Contrary to the content size model, the frames surrounding the Pixel 2 XL screen have been reduced considerably – up to 50% compared to the first generation of Pixel’s -, leaving a frontal occupancy rate close to 79 %. It may not be as high as the Essential Phone, iPhone X or Samsung Galaxy Note8, but is it really necessary?
Otherwise, except for the orange button in the “Black and White” edition, the rest of the details at the physical level are matched to those of Pixel 2. All except the camera location: on the left side of the flash on the Pixel 2 XL, and on the right side in the small size model. It is a simple curiosity, but there it is.
Display: two sizes for all pockets
Google Pixel 2
The Google Pixel 2, with its 5-inch Full HD screen, may be the perfect phone for those looking for a high-end device and do not want to dislocate a wrist every time they lower the notification bar.
For the panel, Google has made use of AMOLED technology again, and unlike in the large model, the aspect ratio is the conventional 16: 9 found in most smartphones on the market. The glass that protects this screen is manufactured by Corning, specifically, it is the Gorilla Glass 5, with a 3D Arc curvature on all four sides.
Google Pixel 2 XL
Of course, big screen lovers also have their place in this generation of Pixel’s phone. With 6 inches and an aspect ratio of 18: 9, the Google Pixel adds to the current trend that several manufacturers of high-end smartphones are already following. In this case, in addition, the technology is not AMOLED, but P-OLED. This, added to the phone is manufactured by LG, makes us think that the Pixel 2 XL screen is, if not the same, a very similar to the LG V30.
In terms of its resolution, also an increase in line with growth in size. With a density of 2,880 x 1,440 pixels, which translates into a Quad HD + resolution. Again, the panel is protected by a curved glass with the fifth generation of Gorilla Glass.
At the multimedia level, Google has decided to improve as well. Following in the footsteps of Apple, HTC or Xiaomi, among others, Google has decided to eliminate the 3.5mm headphone jack of its new Pixel 2. However, the audiophiles have not lost everything, because at last Google has heard users by introducing two front stereo speakers at the top and bottom edges of the display of both variants. When recording audio, enjoy three microphones located on different parts of the body of the terminals.
The lack of the minijack port, Google offers a USB type C adapter that will connect our conventional headphones. In addition, at the software level with an adaptive audio amplifier, which aims to improve our sound experience with smartphones when it comes to listening to music or watching videos and movies.
Power and performance
No matter what model you choose, Google offers the best of the best inside their new star phones. An eight-core Snapdragon 835 processor is responsible for bringing the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL to life, supported by 4GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 64 or 128GB of storage. The capacity of the battery, however, has not been modified compared to the first Pixel in the case of the small model, and 2,700 mAh should keep the lights on. Meanwhile, the larger version does suffer a significant increase, up to 3,520 mAh.
Thanks to the USB port type C of this phone, enjoy a fast charging system capable of charging the device in just over an hour. It is also expected that thanks to the program “Made for Google” that is on the way, grow the catalog of accessories compatible with this technology.
If there is an aspect that the Pixel of last year highlighted the rest of the market phones, that was his photographic section. Until not too long ago, Google devices had the best cameras seen so far on a smartphone, and everything indicates that the company wants to repeat the same story with this new generation.
Instead of making the leap to dual-camera systems, Google has opted for a single 12-megapixel sensor with f/1.9 aperture, equipped with a unique image processor under the name “Imaging Chip“. Once again, the firm relies on computer photography technologies, with which to make the difference in image quality based on the capabilities offered by the software. The famous “portrait mode” will also be integrated into both cameras, as well as Google’s adaptation of the iPhone’s “Live Photo” under the name “Motion Photo“.
On the other hand, the front sensor stays in more than enough 8 megapixels based on AI that will do away with the defects of our face – virtually of course -.
Features And Specs
Google Pixel 2 is the most affordable model of smaller size of this new generation of devices. Despite being a terminal much more similar to the Pixel first edition than the Pixel 2 XL, has some other differential detail, with which Google aims to sneak into the pockets of those looking to enjoy the best possible experience with Android, without leaving aside a content size and a relatively content price when compared to the rest of top phones this year.
The Google Pixel 2 XL, for its part, is the most risky bet of Google for this year. The biggest and expensive phone of this second generation of Pixel’s, manufactured by South Korean LG, stands out for its design, which finally follows the lines of other high-end phones of 2017, as well as the new technologies that do not found in the model of reduced size.
What would Pixel do without the exclusive additions? The software of the new Google Pixel 2 is based on Android 8 Oreo, the new version of the operating system that Google introduced in August this year, and that brings some minor news.
One of the most important, and for now unknown if it will be exclusive of this pair is Google Lens, the new system introduced in the past I/O this year, and which is based on artificial intelligence to identify any object captured with the smartphone camera.
Another of the changes in the software of these terminals will find you just turn on the screen for the first time: in the launcher. The well-known Pixel Launcher now shows a new distribution, with a search bar that happens to be located just below the icons of the dock, and a new widget offered to Google Assistant and the other services to show relevant information in everyday life.
Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL price and availability
The first edition of Pixel phones was famous for the serious problems of production suffered by Google, which ended up translating into a nefarious availability of both terminals. Now, Google wants to avoid by all means that the same story is repeated.
The Google Pixel 2 will hits the shelves on October 19, starting at $649. For the larger variant would have to wait another month, until November 15 for $849 when it hits the market.
