Downgrade iOS

If you have iOS 13 installed, you can go back to the latest official version of iOS 12 for a short time. For example, if you are not satisfied with the performance or want to return to old functions. Follow the steps below to downgrade your iOS device.

Step 1: Download the required firmware file from the Apple website, via or via our download page, which refers to the download files on Apple’s servers.

The file name ends with .ipsw. Make sure that you have downloaded the correct file for the correct device. Save the file where you can easily find it, for example, your desktop.

Step 2: On your iPhone or iPad, first switch off Find my iPhone via Settings-> your name-> iCloud-> Find my iPhone.

Step 3: Open iTunes, connect the iPhone and wait until the iPhone appears in the top left.

Step 4: Mac: Hold down the Alt/ Option key while clicking the Restore button with your mouse.

Windows: Hold down the Shift key while clicking the Restore button with your mouse.

Step 5: Browse for the newly downloaded IPSW file.

Step 6: Confirm that you want to install the chosen firmware.

Step 7: After the installation is completed, you can restore your backup from iTunes or iCloud.

Bear in mind that in many cases you cannot restore a backup from a newer iOS version to an older iOS version. For example, you cannot restore a backup that you made with iOS 13 to a device with iOS 12. Restoring a backup from iOS 12.3.1 to iOS 12.3 is possible. It is always a good idea to make a backup before installing a major update.

Please note: downgrading is only possible for a limited time. Once Apple stops signing the penultimate version of iOS, you can’t go back. It is also good to know that you cannot restore backups that you have made under iOS 13 if you have done the downgrade to iOS 12.
