iPhone 12 Review: Specs, Feature, Camera

0

It is not a surprise that all eyes are on the iPhone 12. Especially now that the gap with the Pro models, on paper, seems to have been completely closed. In fact, with a new design and impressive screen, only the camera system can be called a big difference. Or is that different in practice?

Display

One of the biggest advantages of the iPhone 12 is that the smartphone has become a lot smaller, but that the screen has remained the same size. Although there is a significant quality improvement. The smartphone has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen with a refresh rate of 60Hz. You can live with that perfectly because iPhone users are not used to anything else. But I would be lying to say that I don’t miss a higher refresh rate. Something that is also the case with the iPhone 12 Pro, which makes these two screens identical.

A nice minor addition is that the LCD screen has therefore been replaced by an OLED screen and the edges have also become a lot smaller. The screen is completely flat and not rounded on the sides. Furthermore, the brightness of up to 1200 nits is very good, the color accuracy is high and you have little or nothing to complain about with the pixel density of 460 pixels. The only downside in this area is the fact that the screen is interrupted by the large notch. This notch has been the same since 2017 and I honestly hoped Apple would come up with something for it. Even though the Face ID sensors are incorporated, the possibilities are now endless.

The iPhone 12 also features Ceramic Shield. This is a type of glass that makes the smartphone four times more resistant to fall damage. Something that of course I have not tested and that I just have to take Apple’s word for it. Just like the iPhone 12 Pro, the screen scratches quickly.

Specifications

In terms of performance, you will not be short of anything with the iPhone 12. The smartphone has the new A14 Bionic chip in combination with 4GB of RAM. That’s 2GB less RAM that doesn’t bring much difference while playing games or streaming content is incredibly smooth. You may not be able to get the most out of multitasking, or video export may take longer. But to be honest, I didn’t run into any problems.

  • Screen: 6.1in Super Retina XDR (OLED) (460ppi)
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Processor: Apple A14 Bionic
  • Operating system: iOS 14
  • Storage: 64, 128 or 256GB

  • Dimensions: 146.7mm x 71.5mm x 7.4mm
  • Weight: 162g
  • Connectivity: LTE, wifi 6, NFC, Bluetooth 5, Lightning, ultra wideband and location

Of course, the smartphone is 5G-ready and where this is certainly nice, it adds little at the moment. In that respect, it is quite a shame that as a consumer you do not have a lot of choices when it comes to this expensive addition. Nevertheless. People who buy an iPhone 12 in 2020 will probably use it for years to come, and in that regard, your phone is ready for the future.

Hardware

The design of the iPhone 12, just like the iPhone 12 Pro, has changed significantly. Although the difference with its predecessor is a lot bigger. The iPhone 12, for example, is 11% thinner, 16% lighter, and 15% smaller than the iPhone 11. This makes the device feel less premium than the Pro model, but it feels great in the hand. Something that certainly has to do with the flat sides of the smartphone. Edges made of aluminum instead of stainless steel as is the case with the iPhone 12 Pro. And believe me, that’s an advantage.

Colors

The iPhone 12 is available in five different color options:

  • White
  • Black
  • Blue
  • (PRODUCT) RED
  • Green

It is good to know that the colors are not always as you would expect at first. Where the blue iPhone 12 has a bright color, the green variant has not much to do with it. I have been using that variant for a number of days now and am amazed at the fact that it is very similar to white in most situations. But with a little touch.

iOS 14.1

The iPhone 12 software naturally runs on the most recent software from Apple: iOS 14. The operating system gives users the option to set their home screen to their liking with widgets. Also, it is finally possible to not show certain tabs, so that your home screen can consist of, for example, two tabs. The rest of the apps can then be found in the app library.

Camera

Like its predecessor, the iPhone 12 has a dual-camera system. It consists of a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens. The camera system of the iPhone 11 was already good and this time is no different. Some changes have been made, but they are not very big.

Battery Life

The battery has not improved compared to previous models. That may sound negative, but it is quite impressive. The iPhone 12 has a more powerful display and is physically equipped with a smaller battery. Nevertheless, it is possible to do at least a day and a half on a full charge. Those who use their phone a lot will be able to use it for a day. In any case, a screen time of 6 hours is not an exception for this phone. Very tasty.

When you have no battery left, it is possible to charge the battery with a power of 20W. For this, buying the USB-C adapter from Apple, because this adapter is no longer supplied as standard. Those who still have a charger from last year will be able to charge with a power of 15W. Chargers from previous models won’t do well, as the smartphone comes with a USB-C to Lightning port cable.

Another alternative is to use MagSafe, although I must admit that I have not seen the big advantage of it yet. Curious about my motives? Be sure to read the review about MagSafe!

The iPhone 12 has become slightly more expensive compared to the iPhone 11. This is mainly due to the introduction of 5G, which will not be of great use in the Netherlands in 2020. That is a shame, but you also get a lot in return.

The iPhone 12 has a beautiful design and a considerably better screen. The battery life has remained about the same, and the camera system has gotten a little better. It may be clear that the gap with the Pro model has become a lot smaller, even though it is still more expensive.

It should be noted that the iPhone 12 is a great deal thanks to its price/quality ratio. This is the model that most people will buy. This is the model that will serve the general consumer excellently.
