The company Jide, founded by three former Google employees, introduced at CES 2015 in Las Vegas, the Remix Ultra tablet. While it has obviously oriented hardware design of the Microsoft Surface-series, based on Android Remix OS is a software used, which shows among others the display of smartphone-optimized apps in windowed mode killer feature with it.
At the sight of Jide Remix Ultra Tablet some people should at first think they have a Surface tablet from Microsoft before him – the foldable kickstand, the oblique case edges and the magnetic dockable keyboard are all features of the tablet from Microsoft are also characteristic. But who now assumes a Chinese no-name company had just brazenly uses the design of Microsoft, are completely wrong: Jeremy Zhou, David Ko and Ben Luk are namely as the founder behind the company Jide and may all years of career show on Google. However, it should be noted that the three only been active in the areas of Gmail, Talk, Google Maps and Adwords, what could possibly be an explanation for the not very original hardware design.
Interestingly, of course, is the question of how the three ex-Googlers came forward to bring a product to market, but it looks very much like a Microsoft Surface. The claims to want to combine the advantages of tablets and laptops in one device. The approach is certainly laudable, but is expected in view of the many available on the market Convertibles – and not least of the surface itself, which is, after all, promoted by Microsoft as a notebook alternative – certainly not the first company with the idea.
If you can overlook the little original hardware design of time, which in any case could still bring a complaint from Redmond to the company, the Remix Ultra tablet can quite convincing: The 11.6-inch IPS display has a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels when the processor NVIDIA Tegra 4 comes with 2 GB of RAM used. Of internal memory is available either 16 or 64 GB, with an expansion via microSD card of up to 128 GB is also possible. The battery has a very respectable cargo capacity of 8,100 mAh, where there are no official figures on the expected running time. A USB port does not have the tablet though, a corresponding micro-USB adapter rests with the delivery. Of the lot is a dockable keyboard that is connected via a magnetic Port and also serves as a cover for the tablet.
Really exciting is finally in the software. In Remix OS is a work based on the Android operating system, which is designed specifically for devices with a larger display. Although, these are just to Android 4.4.2 KitKat, but the surface of the Remix OS based anyway at many locations on Android 5.0 lollipop and its material design. Although Google apparently works for some time at a window mode for tablets, but also on Android 5.0 Lollipop this has not yet made its appearance. Furthermore, most Android developers do not really seem to strive to provide a tablet-optimized version of their applications. Under Remix OS it is possible, however, applications with a tap on the appropriate icon in the task bar – to display in windowed mode – this is also typical of the Remix OS feature.
Otherwise than with Samsung or LG apps, however this appears in the scaling for smartphones. As a result, the apps in windowed mode can be used easily, because the applications for smart phones already contain small controls. The use of multiple apps in windowed mode should be no problem at the same time. In the video from colleagues TechView Remix OS and Window mode is demonstrated, in which the developers have probably also oriented in the software in some places or Microsoft Windows 8.
For now, the remix of Ultra Tablet Jide will be offered only in China, but also in the United States and England, the tablet from the second or third quarter of this year will be available. The 16 GB version proposed here with a price of $349, the 64 GB version will cost $449, so that the devices are priced quite attractive.
